So, What Is
'Search Engine Optimisation'?
(SEO)
Search engine optimisation or 'SEO' is modifying your website in both the 'on page' and 'off page' areas to make them very easy for any search engine to read and understand what your website is about. You also need to show that your website is an 'authoritative' and popular website so the search engines will show your web page at the top for a number of search terms. There are many ways to achieve these outcomes and some are better than others.

Why Is Search Engine Optimisation So Important?
Unfortunately, that massive amount of international "SEO company's" doing what seems to be a never-ending wave of cold calling has done two things to the local business owners here in Australia.
1. Business owners are absolutely fed up with hearing the phrase "I can get your business to the number 1 position in google"
2. Business owners have developed a certain level of resentment when it comes to anything Google or SEO related, and I don't blame them!

2. Business owners have developed a certain level of resentment when it comes to anything Google or SEO related, and I don't blame them!
But in an attempt to clear up the confusion and show what the real and measurable benefits of showing up in not just Google, but any other the major search engines are I'm going to rely on good old numbers.
It's no surprise that people being people, will generally search the same things as one another, the phrase they search is often referred to as a 'keyword'. For example, if I was looking for an auto electrician, I would just search "auto electrician" and so would 2400 other people every month according to one of my research tools.
Now as I just said, if we Google the term "auto electrician" this page will see around 2400 visitors every month. Statistically speaking, 61.5% of those visitors will go to the top 3 results.

Number 1 - 780 visitors (32.5%)
Number 2 - 422 visitors (17.6%)
Number 3 - 273 Visitors (11.4%)
And further to that, 91.5% of people will only look at page 1 of google results
Number 2 - 422 visitors (17.6%)
Number 3 - 273 Visitors (11.4%)
And further to that, 91.5% of people will only look at page 1 of google results
So those two pieces of information should show you two things,
A. If you're not on page 1 you have little to no hope of getting many visitors or paying customers from your website
B. If you get to the top 3 positions, you could be getting anywhere from 11% - 32% of the traffic for that keyword
Now to see what '32% of the traffic' looks like let's run a few numbers.
According to the statistics the number 1 position for the search term "auto electrician" is getting around 780 visitors every month, now you don't search for an auto electrician unless you need one so it's fair to say the majority of them are potential customers.
Let's say 10% of them book their car in for some work, and the average spend was $200/customer
78 x $200 = $15,600 revenue in a single month*
For one keyword, a business could potentially generate over $15,000* of revenue in a single month. Then what happens when they start to rank for several different keywords, I'm sure you get the picture.
Hopefully, this has helped you understand what it can mean for a business to be "ranking number 1 in google" and what that could do in terms of growth for a business.
(*These are not real figures and are only an example based on statistical search data. The actual revenue generated each month is dependent on the individual business and would greatly vary based on a number of factors not mentioned in this article.)
